Happy New Year! The year is off to a pretty good start. Several photos I took last year at an event (including the image above) have been published in a calendar. More images (some by me, some by others) are available on Flickr.
I attended one of the best events leading up to the 2010 East-West Shrine Game, a college all-star football game benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children (in the interest of full disclosure the hospital system is my employer and I had no involvement in the calendar project).
Each year, coaches and players visit a Shriners Hospitals for Children to see the reason behind the game, and meet children and families benefiting from the specialized medical services provided by the hospital system. The game last year was in Orlando, so everyone boarded buses and headed to west on I-4 to the hospital in Tampa.
Seeing these big, burly football players interacting with the kids is a lot of fun. The excitement of the children meeting these guys is even more fun to see (and photograph). It’s a real pep-rally environment with food, music, games and activities for everyone.
This year’s game is Jan. 22 in Orlando and they will again visit the Tampa hospital. You can bet I’ll be at the hospital visit again this year.
